Call for Art: Contemporary South

Call for Art: Contemporary South 2017, VAE, Raleigh, NC

Deadline – 11:59pm on December 21, 2016

The South is a hub for creativity. Raleigh is doing its part to lead this charge: The City of Raleigh recently adopted the Raleigh Arts Plan, a ten-year master plan to strengthen arts and culture for all. The newly appointed Director of the Office of Raleigh Arts has committed to “saying yes” to more creative people.

To do our part, VAE showcases some of the most ambitious and timely works by artists from across the region in our annual exhibition, Contemporary South. The purpose of the exhibition is to gather a survey of what creative people in the Regional South are currently creating. Since 2012 this exhibition has grown and expanded to become one of VAE’s most well-received exhibitions. We invite you to help us make COSO17 the best iteration yet!

Call for Art: 32nd Annual Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition: P/N 32 ‘Curated’ and P/N 32 ‘Open’, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee

Deadline: January 31, 2017

Organized by Slocumb Galleries under ETSU Department of Art & Design, P/N serves as platform for diverse and innovative contemporary art practices since 1985. This year’s juror is Dr. Anja Foerschner, independent curator, photographer and research specialist at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, CA.

P/N32 ‘Curated’ – March 13 to April 7, 2017, at Slocumb Galleries. Dr. Foerschner wrote, “Recent political developments in Europe and the US testify to deep-seated divide, high frustration and fear seated in its population. The public discourse is characterized by political and economic themes with humane and cultural issues receiving less attention. The visual arts are pushed into the margins, even though their power as tool for expression of, reflection on, and change of social conditions is undeniable and currently becomes increasingly important. PN32 Curated seeks diverse work that reclaim art’s space in our society, especially in times of political/social upheaval; pieces that are created out of concern with cultural, social, economic and political circumstances.”

P/N ‘Open’ – March 13 to 31, 2017 at Tipton Gallery, has NO theme or media preference.

Open to US-based artists 18 years and older. Work max of 6 ft., installation/performance artists may submit video. Juror notification: February 15, 2017; receive accepted work: March 8, 2017. Call for Art: The Slide Show, Glass Wheel Studio, Norfolk ,VA

Call for Art: The Slide Show, Glass Wheel Studio, Norfolk, VA

Deadline: September 5, 2016

If you took an art history course any time before the year 2005 you probably know a lot about

2 x 2 slides. They were the primary means through which art history was taught. All of that has changed now, of course. PowerPoint has relegated analog slide lectures to the scrap heap of history. As a result, universities and art historians have found themselves holding collections of literally thousands of old slides; all carefully labeled, arranged, and catalogued. These collections have become obsolete for the purposes for which they were made. They are sadly unemployed.

To remedy the situation, we seek your help in giving these slides a second life – as raw material and conceptual inspiration for creative works.

Interested artists will be mailed 36, randomly selected, 2 x 2 slides from a 10,000 slide collection covering the entire history of Western art. Responsive artworks will then be juried by a small panel of museum, gallery, and educational program directors into ‘The Slide Show’ exhibition at Glass Wheel Studio in Norfolk, VA on view January 21-February 26, 2017.
